Computer requirements?
Your computer needs the following:
- Windows™ XP, 2000, 95, 98/98se, Me, NT4.0, 2003 or (.NET).
- Pentium processor.
- 32 MB RAM (Memory) or more.
- An Internet Connection.
What type of Internet Connection do I need?
You need a modem, Cable modem, ADSL, broadband or similar Internet connection.
How long does backup take?
Many factors can affect how long your backup will take, these include:
- How you connect to the Internet, &
- How many documents you backup.
In all cases, your first backup will take the longest. First your backup files are compressed, encrypted then sent to your backup account. Following backups get quicker as they do not need to backup the entire file again. They collect the parts of the file that have changed and add these to your backups.
This is useful if you quickly need to restore an older document, rather than the newest version. You can restore document versions backed up within the last 28 days.
A bit more about compression
Imagine an old car waiting to be crushed. Before being crushed, much of the car is an air filled space. After being crushed, it becomes a relatively small, lump of metal. You can think of compressed data in a similar way, but luckily it is easier to un-crush!
Whenever possible, your backup files are compressed. It is difficult to tell how much they will compress during backup. Factors such as, the file type or existing compression settings vary between customers.
However, files usually compresses by a third to a half. If your first backup is typical of the documents you will backup; use it as a guide to your compression expectations.
Take care with images
It is easy to build quite a collection of images with so many digital cameras on the market.
Take care: Images do not generally compress a lot. So, be selective with the images you choose to back up.
